Nevada City Council Could See Major Overhaul

The Iowa Caucuses have officially kicked off the Presidential election season, but things could get quite interesting locally, especially in Nevada City. It’s conceivable that four of the five Nevada City council seats could turn over this year. Terri Andersen, Robert Bergman, and Jennifer Ray are all up for re-election, and Duane Strawser is running for County Supervisor. The only person guaranteed to be on the council come July is Evans Phelps, and she’ll be mayor…

That happened to Phelps. She joined the council after Sally Harris decided not to run again. Neither Ray, Andersen, nor Bergman have announced publicly whether or not they’ll be running for another term, but Phelps says if they do run, they’ll be facing some competition this time…

The candidate filing period for the June election begins February 16. Besides the three council seats, the City Clerk seat is up for election, and Nevada City voters will have to consider an “air b-and-b” measure. For those outside the city, there’s the county’s medical marijuana ordinance, and three Supervisorial seats. Grass Valley has three council seats up for election this year, but that’s not until November.
