Nevada City Farmer Lobbies Congress

A Nevada City woman is part of a group of independent family farmers urging Congress to restore funding for sustainable agriculture, and pass a new five-year farm bill. The group met with farmers in Washington D-C to help them understand how programs included in the bill affect farms and their communities. Maizie Ganz is the owner of Soil Sisters Farm in Nevada City. She says she was there to show how these programs are vital to young farmers like herself…

Congress passed a short-term extension of the current farm bill, but that will expire in September. Ganz says, though, that without funding for a whole year, certain programs will be compromised…

Ganz says Congress has the opportunity to fix the situation by passing the so-called Continuing Resolution, which would end the current sequestration of federal funds.
