Just in time for the reopening of California’s economy, and the anticipated tourism revival, Nevada City has received another published accolade. For the first time, it gets a mention in Smithsonian Magazine as being among the top 15 small towns to visit in the country. With its Victorian-era homes, balconied 19th-century structures, and the only main street still lined with gas lamps, west of the Mississippi, the magazine says it looks like something straight out of a Hallmark Christmas movie. That’s in reference to the 2006 film, A Christmas Card, which, it says still draws thousands of fans from coast-to-coast. Smithsonian Magazine also mentions Nevada City’s Gold Rush history and the Nevada Theatre, which opened back in 1865.
