Nevada City Safe- Businesses Self-Certify COVID Safety

Last week Nevada City rolled out a pair of emergency ordinances and a resolution to help people feel safe about going downtown and shopping during the holiday season. The resolution focuses on businesses that are following COVID safe practices and health protocols. Nevada City Police Chief Chad Ellis presented Nevada City Safe to the city council. The program includes marketing as well as limited documentation that promotes the business.

A short self-certification form signed by the business owner and a city official, and a longer Site Specific COVID Safety Plan is also part of the package.
Mayor Erin Minett says the program was established at the request of a number of residents.

With a number of residents and businesses refusing to follow guidelines, Minett says it had been confusing about which businesses were safe and she was concerned people would avoid shopping in town. She wants to actively promote safe businesses.

The council also approved a controversial mask wearing urgency ordinance as part of the three item addressing COVID-19.
