Learn about and explore the Jewish California Gold Rush presence. Speaker, Stephen Kinsey is Chairman of Commission for the Preservation of Pioneer Jewish Cemetery and Landmarks in the West. Established in 1962, this organization’s mission is to maintain, restore, and educate people about Jewish life in the 1850’s and pioneer Jewish cemeteries in the California Gold Country: Sonora, Mokelumne Hill, Jackson, Placerville, Nevada City, Grass Valley, and Marysville. During the Gold Rush era numerous Jewish merchants were in these communities. Some individuals became leaders in their local civic affairs. There were a few established synagogues, as well, but the Jewish cemeteries were prominent in the lifecycles for the region’s residents.
