It’s a bill in the state legislature called the ‘Internet For All Act’, and it now has full support of the Nevada County Board of Supervisors. Assembly Bill 1665 authored by Eduardo Garcia, and co-sponsored by Nevada County’s Assemblyman Brian Dahle, would encourage funding for broadband projects in rural areas. District One Supervisor Heidi Hall wrote a letter in support, and took it to the full board. She says the money would be allocated by the state Public Utilities Commission, out of a surcharge you pay for your telephone service…
For example, the local Spiral Internet project, which is still being installed, and has met several politial and financial hurdles. Hall says once the Board understood where the money comes from, they voted unanimously to support Hall’s letter…
Part of the language of the bill says “In approving infrastructure projects, the commission shall give priority to projects that provide last-mile broadband access to households that are unserved by an existing facilities-based broadband provider.” The bill is currently in the Assembly Appropriations Committee.
