New Card Readers Mandated at the Pumps

Local gas stations are changing the charge card systems on their gas pumps. Robinson Enterprises Petroleum Manager Don Hoffler says each of the stations owned by Robinson Enterprises has already completed the upgraded security system. The new encrypted system will take effect in 2014. Hoffler says with the new machines, debit cards will be encrypted at the gas pump so that sensitive account and pin number information cannot be stolen as the information is transferred from the pump to the main terminal inside the station.

The upgrade costs $3,000 for each gas pump. If the station does not complete the upgrade then Visa and Master card debit cards will only work as a credit card not a debit card. Hoffler says unfortunately the new system will not stop criminals from attaching skimmers to the gas pump and stealing your card information and pin number.
