New Drought Proclamation From Governor

Nevada County’s inclusion in Governor Newsom’s major expansion of his drought emergency proclamation won’t have much impact, at this point. The Nevada Irrigation District Board approved a similar declaration a couple of weeks ago. District Water Operations Manager Chip Close says no mandates are involved yet. Customers are being asked for a 10-percent voluntary conservation. But he says the governor’s proclamation does direct the State Water Board to consider modifying water district requirements…

The proclamation, which now covers 41 counties, instead of only two, also comes after two straight years of below-normal precipitation, compared to three years in a row the last time it was issued…

Also, there was a record-low one-tenth of an inch of precipitation in the Grass Valley region, in April. Meanwhile, Newsom is also proposing a five-point-one billion dollar package of immediate drought response and long-term water resilience investments.
