Expanded low-cost or free legal service is on the way for Nevada County residents. A new non-profit called Community Legal is opening its doors on Tuesday, August 11th, across from the courthouse, in the former location of the Searls Law Library. Attorney and project organizer Erin Noel says very few services are currently available for low-income residents…
Noel says the main goal is to mediate disagreements before they end up in court and often end up requiring expensive representation from a private attorney…
Noel says some limited-scope court representation will also be available for those who qualify. Community Legal will gradually add services over the next several months, including monthly clinics at various non-profit group locations on such topics as landlord-tenant and family law, wills, trusts, and MediCal issues. Services will also be available at other locations, including FREED and the San Juan Ridge Family Resource Center. Noel says financial support comes from a broad base of organizations and individuals. Donations are also accepted through their web site, or you can call them.
