Nevada County Sheriff’s Captain Paul Schmidt says the deputy stopped the vehicle and the driver gave him some identification from New York state, but the deputy couldn’t verify the information because the New York database system was down at the time.

There was also a passenger in the vehicle but the deputy was getting conflicting stories from the driver and the passenger. He finally searched the vehicle.

The suspect, later identified as 32 year old David Powell of Rosedale, New York was booked into county jail on two felony counts of possession of marijuana. He has already bailed out on  $10,000 bail.  The vehicle Powell was driving was a rental car.
