NID May Help Reduce Groundwater Depletion

While groundwater shortages may not be a very big issue in Nevada County, the recent drought has resulted in major depletions in some other nearby areas, including in Placer County. And the Nevada Irrigation District may soon be helping out. The District is considering a memorandum of agreement to join what’s called the West Placer Groundwater Sustainability Agency. NID water operations manager, Chip Close, says many people don’t realize that they are only a surfacewater agency. And since a small part of their service boundary does overlap a groundwater basin in the Lincoln area, they could help with their irrigation water canals…

Due to overdrafting during the drought, the state passed a law in 2014 which requires any groundwater basin considered a medium or high priority to be managed by a sustainability agency…

The NID Board of Directors is expected to vote on joining the agency, following a public hearing, at their meeting, Wednesday morning at 9.
