Repairs to a major water supply canal for the Nevada Irrigation District are on schedule to be completed in about a week. District Operations Manager Chip Close says no shortages have been reported. The record winter rains caused a landslide, in February, that caused a section of the elevated South Yuba Canal to break free of its footings, creating a breach and interrupting service. A continued wet spring has also delayed completion of repairs. Close says all that rain has also made it easier for customers to make voluntary usage reductions, since last week, although he’s not sure it’s been as high as 25%, which the district requested…
The canal is owned and operated by PG and E and is located in the Lowell Hill area east of Nevada City. Close says it’s estimated that the canal will return to service between May 31st and June 3rd….
NID says it’s also utilized all available supplies and numerous pumping facilities to keep pace with customer demand.
