No Federal Funding Cut For KVMR

Good news for community radio station KVMR. The federal budget plan scheduled for a final vote on Wednesday does not include the proposal from the Trump Administration to eliminate funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Station General Manager Julie ChiarelliĀ  says the same level of funding from last year will be maintained through 2019. She says they were facing an 18% cut to their budget, or $174,000…

Chiarelli says although all of KVMR’s broadcasters are volunteers, a large part of their budget is devoted to their 10-member non-announcing paid staff….

Chiarelli says some programming might also have faced the ax, including from the BBC. She also points out that this is not the first time there’s been an attempt to get rid of federal funding for public broadcasting. But she says this is probably one of the few issues in Congress that continues to have a lot of bi-partisan support.
