Nordic Ski Club Hosts Avalanche Expert

The Nordic Skiers of Nevada County Club members are getting ready for an active winter, following three years of drought and very little snow.

Club Membership Chair, Phil Horning says they meet on the first Thursday of the month during the winter months and the club has between 80 and 100 active members . This Thursday they will have a special guest speaker, Brandon Schwartz with the Sierra Avalanche Center who will talk about Avalanche danger and how to use their website to get information.

The Nordic Skiers of Nevada County meet at Seamen’s Lodge in Pioneer Park, and Horning says the public is welcome.

Horning says the main point of back country skiing is the joy of skiing and the beauty of the back country, but they work together as a group for safety reasons. Also there’s times when the snow is so deep you need several members because you need to break trail, so going out as a group is a much better way to work it.
