Officers Shot While Investigating Illegal Campsite

Officers investigating a campsite with vehicles on Bureau of Land Management property off North Bloomfield Road near Edward’s Crossing on the South Yuba River had an unexpected surprise when gunfire broke out. CHP Officer Greg Tassone says that CHP were originally sent to the site to check on the vehicles and was a relatively routine assignment.

The suspect has been identified as 60 year old Brent Douglas Cole.

The BLM officer and the suspect were treated by paramedics on site and then airlifted to Sutter Roseville Trauma Center.

The CHP Officer transported himself to Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital with minor injuries where he was treated and released.
The Nevada County Sheriff Office is handling the investigation.
Officer Tassone says that initial reports stated a second subject was involved with the incident. However, that subject was cleared of any involvement in the shooting, but was taken into custody for unrelated outstanding warrants.
