Park Avenue Earns Max Accreditation Extension

Alternative Learning in the Nevada Joint Union High School District is improving and received the highest mark possible during a recent accreditation visit by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Park Avenue Alternative Learning Site, which houses Silver Springs High School and Sierra Foothill High School as well as the RISE Special Education Program and the Young Parents Program, received a 3 year extension to their accreditation which will complete the current six year accreditation cycle. Principal Marty Mathieson is proud of the changes that have been implemented over the past two years.

Mathieson says staff addressed classroom management, student behaviors, discipline, and academic achievement by taking an honest look at what was in place and what could be modified to increase chances of student success. The effort has been so successful that when students were recently asked by a visitor to talk about positives in Grass Valley, they chose to speak about Park Avenue.

Mathieson says the next step is to add more Career Technical Education and he is doing that by making more connections to Sierra College Certification Programs and also expanding offerings at Park Avenue as community partnerships are developed and budget allows.
Marty Mathieson moved over to Park Avenue two years ago from his prior position as Principal at Nevada Union High School.
