Placer County Detective, Jim Hudson, says the suspects contacted the potential victims using the telephone.

The suspects tried to pre-empt the victims from calling the sheriff by having a second caller try to confirm that the first caller was real.*

The elderly couple did not fall forĀ  the scam and contacted the sheriff to report the incident. Unfortunately this is not an uncommon type of scam.

If you are ever contacted for a solicitation of money you should contact law enforcement immediately. Do not send any funds.
