20-Million Dollar Canal Upgrade Moves Ahead

Plans for a 20-million dollar upgrade of the main canal system for the Nevada Irrigation District are moving forward. A 370-thousand dollar engineering contract has been awarded to an international firm with an office in Nevada City. District Operations Manager Chip Close says the aging canal, which runs from Combie Reservoir through the steep Bear River Canyon, is a source for their North Auburn and Lake of the Pines water treatment plants…

Close says the district is planning a bond issue to finance the work and there’ll be no major impact on rates. The district says it’s a key facility, carrying nearly two-thirds of the water that they supply.
