Though Proposition 47 reduced a number of criminal offenses from felonies to misdemeanors, the number of crimes taking place is still the same. Nevada County District Attorney estimates several hundred arrests will be for lesser charges rather than felonies.
In order to handle the change, Newell is restructuring the office.
The DA is also working with the probation department to develop a solution. Both departments want to limit the possibility of revolving doors for criminals with multiple offenses. Though probation used to monitor only felony offenders, now they will also monitor repeat misdemeanor offenders.
Newell says that his staff is also adjusting to cases that were already in the works.
On top of that there are a number of offenders already serving time whose attorneys are pushing to get charges reduced from felonies to misdemeanors.
Proposition 47 went into effect the day after it was approved by California voters in November.
