With the deadline on Friday, some property taxpayers in California will be getting some leeway after all, because of the coronavirus. Nevada County Treasurer-Tax Collector Tina Vernon says currently counties are prohibited, by a state code section, to allow delays, based solely on financial hardship…
Vernon says a specific checklist is being developed for those situations. While the income tax deadlines have been pushed back, that hadn’t applied to property taxes, and delays had been opposed by counties, due to the revenue being a primary funding source for such services as law enforcement, fire protection and, schools. Vernon says right now, collections have been on track and it’s too early to say what kind of impact there will be, depending on how many exceptions will be granted…
Vernon says the Nevada County Treasurer-Tax Collectors office is still staffed from 8am to 5pm on weekdays. But it’s closed to the public, except by appointment.
