Rare Sobriety Checkpoint In Nevada County

For just the second time in the last 15 months, a sobriety/driver’s license checkpoint will be set up in Nevada County, and just in time for Labor Day weekend. It’s being called “Avoid the Five” and funded through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety. The Highway Patrol is the lead agency, but will be assisted by the Sheriff’s Department, as well as the Grass Valley, Nevada City, and Truckee Police Departments. CHP Officer Greg Tassone says the checkpoint will be held Saturday night, from 8 to midnight, in the western part of the county. And he hopes it’ll be mostly informational, and not punitive…

The specific location of this checkpoint isn’t available until the day it happens. The Highway Patrol says their goal is to ensure the safe passage of motorists, by targeting roads where there is a high frequency of intoxicated and unlicensed drivers. The last two checkpoints in Nevada County were both held on Memorial Day Weekend, this year and last year. Tassone says he doubts another one will be held this year.
