Realignment Hitting Nevada County

Nevada County District Attorney Cliff Newell says the county criminal justice system is beginning to feel some of the strain that he and Sheriff Keith Royal warned would happen with the implementation of AB-109. Newell says the realignment of state prisons is having an impact here.

Additionally a new policy that went into effect July 1st is sending parole violators back to the county to be prosecuted.

Newell says he will have a better idea of the impact to the local criminal justice system after a few months but he estimates a 20 percent increase in caseload for his office probation and the Public Defender’s office.
