With new solar panels being installed at the Nevada County Government Center, and the first day of summer Tuesday, what better time for a ‘Solar-bration’. Project Financial Officer Mary Ross says there will be a ‘flipping of the switch’ ceremony at the Rood Center in the morning, with Board of Supervisors Chair Hank Weston doing the honors…
The project not only will have power generated by the solar panels, but also includes energy efficiency by repairing or replacing old equipment. Ross says the solar arrays cost ten-point-six million dollars, financed over 20 years through a federally subsidized bond program. The energy efficiency portion cost two-point-three million, financed with tax-exempt bonds over 15 years, but both should result in substantial savings in the long run over the next 30 years. Facilities Project Manager Tom Coburn says the solar arrays will generate about 95 percent of the power needed to run the county facilities, but other restrictions keep it from providing all the power…
The solar arrays also provide shaded parking. During the ‘solar-bration’, an award will be presented by the Nevada County Climate Change Coalition, and there will also be information about how you can embark on your own solar project. Light refreshments, including sun tea, will be served. The event starts at 11am in the Rood Center parking lot.
