As roundabouts have become increasingly common on California’s streets and roads, Grass Valley’s Public Works Director says they aren’t planning any more at this time, although he hasn’t ruled out the possibility for the future. Meanwhile, Tim Kiser says the two on East Main Street at Idaho Maryland Road, and on Sierra College Drive, HAVE been effective in reducing traffic congestion…
Kiser says traffic signals would have been more complicated, as well as more expensive, with their proximity to the highway…
A roundabout with painted-only features and directions was also opened less than a year ago near Olympia Plaza. Kiser says roundabouts also greatly reduce the chance of serious accidents, especially head-on crashes, with traffic moving in a slower and circular direction. He says there’s still the possibility of sideswipe-type collisions…but nothing major. He says pedestrian safety is also improved.
