Running to End Hunger

Over a hundred runners and walkers hit the streets and trails of Nevada City Saturday as part of the 6th Annual Run to End Hunger. The proceeds from the 5 or 10 K event go to support the Nevada County Food Bank. Before the start of the run, Executive Director Toni Thomspon tells KNCO’s Paul Haas the specific programs the Run to End Hunger supports are school based.

Beyond the school programs, Thompson paints a picture of just how much food the Food Bank needs to distribute each month.

The number of people needing food assistance from the Food Bank is growing each year.

A majority of the food the Food Bank provides are non-perishable goods because they have a longer shelf life. However the Food Bank has a garden now so fresh produce is also available at different times of the year.

The Food Bank also provides nutrition education to their clients. Thompson says people wont cook with a food if they do not know how to use it.
When it comes to food donations to the Food Bank, Thompson says its important to give food that is still within the use-by-date-range.

Food Bank Board President, Bobbi Powell, has been involved with the Food Bank for over 10 tears and says that Toni Thompson is the driving force behind the success of the food bank. She also credits all of the volunteers that make things happen for the Food Bank.
Over 2000 dollars were raised through entry fees and a lot of food donations also came in at he Run to End Hunger.
