Senator Nielsen Opposes Governor’s Prison Plan

Governor Jerry Brown has submitted his plan to address the federal court’s order to reduce the state’s prison population by nearly 10,000 inmates . Former Chair of the State Board of Prison Terms and longtime opponent of Brown’s public safety plan, State Senator Jim Nielsen (R-Gerber) is less than satisfied with the Governor’s proposal.

Nielsen says the governor’s plan needs to be more comprehensive in addressing the many negative aspects of realignment.

Nielsen also says that allowing prisoners to earn sentence reductions through “good behavior” is not really earned credit.

With the governor’s document falling short, Nielsen hops that he will bring in experts to develop an alternative.

Nielsen suggests that closed community corrections facilities like the one in Live Oak should be reopened until the state can build adequate capacity.
