Seven Cited In Latest Unlicensed Contractors Sting

The latest sting has resulted in misdemeanor citations for seven unlicensed contractors in Nevada County. District Attorney Cliff Newell says they’re conducted annually by undercover personnel with the Contractors State License Board’s Investigative Fraud Team. There’s one done on the east side of the county and one on the west side. Newell says the latest home that was used as a lure, Tuesday, was a single-family home east of Highway 49….

Work the illegal operators showed up to do included tree removal, painting, concrete, deck reconstruction and refinishing, and landscaping. All bids exceeded 500 dollars in combined labor and material costs, which is the legal limit before a license is required. Newell says in addition to putting homeowners at risk, unlicensed contractors create unfair business competition…

Newell says it’s hard to say whether just conducting the stings annually are reducing the problem significantly. But he says resources are inadequate for doing them more often.
