Sheriff Car Speared by Pole Following Chase and Crash

An early morning car chase ended with a suspect crashing into a pole and the pole spearing the Sheriff Car that was in pursuit. According to CHP Officer Greg Tassone the event began just before 3:30 Thursday morning when the deputy spotted a vehicle with a number of mechanical issues entering the westbound freeway at East Main Street. The deputy initiated a traffic stop however, the driver of the suspect vehicle did not initially respond and continued on the freeway.

The speeding vehicle entered a windy part of Allison Ranch Road. The sheriff backed off, but the suspect vehicle lost control.

The impact sheared the pole in half but was still connected to the wire and the top part swung down towards the ground.

CHP, Grass Valley Police along with the Sheriff’s Office all responded to the scene. No injuries occurred but additional circumstances were uncovered during the investigation.

The 17 year old driver was taken to custody on a number of charges including felony evading a peace officer, felony vehicle theft, felony possession of stolen property, misdemeanor DUI and driving without a license. The suspect was taken to Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital for medical clearance before being booked into Juvenile Hall.
