Local law enforcement agencies are not happy about the passage of Proposition 47 during the November 4th election. Sheriff Keith Royal says the ballot title was misleading and believes the public didn’t understand what the consequences would be.
The crimes Sheriff Royal specifically references are drug related in nature.
Royal says that in effect criminals of this kind will have more opportunities to continue dealing drugs in the community.
A second concern is the those using controlled substances will also only be charged with misdemeanors. This will keep users on the street who typically break the law in order to afford there behavior.
A third concern is that criminals currently in jail for these types of crimes have an opportunity to have there charges reduced.
Crimes related to burglary, especially burglary of guns are also becoming less restrictive.
Law enforcement agencies throughout the state did not support Prop 47, however it did passed handily with a 58% yes vote.
