Sheriff Supports Brown’s Position on Prisoner Reduction

Governor Brown has also said this week that he will fight a federal court order to reduce the state’s prison inmate population. Nevada County Sheriff Keith Royal says he supports the Governor’s decision.

One of the options that could be implemented is to have inmates with nine months or less remaining on their sentences, serve the remainder of their term in a county jail. Royal says Nevada County may be able to handle that, but other counties won’t.

But another option would mean moving violent offenders into local jails. Royal says that’s not a good idea.

Brown has proclaimed the state’s prison emergency over, and says it would be “unnecessary and unsafe” for the courts to order further inmate reductions.
