Call it Fat Tuesday or Shrove Tuesday, the day before Lent is a time to feast and use up the foods in the pantry that aren’t allowed during Lent.

Millie Beatie is the Chairperson of the event at Emmanuel Episcopal Church who says pancakes and waffles became a tradition for Shrove Tuesday because they could use up the food in the pantry before Lent.

The ladies of Saint Catherine’s Guild were encouraged to serve waffles as a fundraiser for the church which they did for the first time in 1916. Now, 99 years later, the tradition carries on.

The first seating is from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. today and the evening meal is served from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Emmanuel Episcopal church is located at 235 So. Church Street in Grass Valley. Money raised from the event goes to various organizations in the community.
