Sink Hole Repair in Progress on Highway 49

Emergency repairs are underway on a section of Highway 49 near the Golden Chain Motel, south of Grass Valley. CalTrans Engineer Jeff Johnson is in charge of the La Barr Meadows project says, a contractor is setting safety railing today so traffic can pass through in both directions. He says the repairs could take up thirty days depending on the damage they find.

The problem developed when the heavy winter storm dumped a large amount of water into a culvert under the highway that had been put in in the fifties. The water under cut the road way, causing a type of sink hole.
