Smethers Announces Run for Sheriff

There’s a new candidate for Sheriff in Nevada County. Keith Royal is not seeking re-election next year, and there are now three candidates vying to be his successor. The latest is Bill Smethers, who is a veteran of the Sheriff’s Department, and currently holds the rank of Executive Lieutenant at the Wayne Brown Correctional Facility. Smethers says even though the announcement is later than others, he’s been planning a run for awhile now…

Smethers says the people he had talked to had expressed “uncertainty” about the department, and that’s why they urged him to run. Smethers says one of the issues where he feels he differs from his opponents, is marijuana, and enforcement of illegal grows…

Smethers joins Sheriff’s Captain Shannan Moon and former Grass Valley Police Chief John Foster in the race next June. With three candidates now, if no one gets a majority in June’s election, the top two would have a runoff in November.
