St Piran’s Day Saturday

Grass Valley is getting ready for the tenth annual Saint Piran’s Day celebration tomorrow morning. Saint Piran is to the Cornish as Saint Patrick is to the Irish. Downtown Business Association Executive Director Julia Jordan says the corner of Main and Auburn Streets will be a busy place.

The pasties are made with dog food, so the four-legged ones can enjoy some fine dining. Jordan says the pasty toss is the main event.

There will be competitions in various age groups, and prizes will be awarded. The mayors and police chiefs of Grass Valley and Nevada City are also scheduled to compete against each other. The event, in the City Hall parking lot, will run from 9:30 to 11am, and you might want to get there a little early if you plan to be in the pasty contest. Grass Valley has many Cornish roots, and Cornwall, England is Grass Valley’s sister city.
