Nevada County students appear to fare better than a number of other counties, when it comes to the first-ever scores from the new STAR tests. 48-percent met or exceeded English-Language Arts standards, compared to 44-percent statewide. About 36-percent met or exceeded Math standards, compared to 33-percent statewide. That’s still much lower than with the old STAR tests, as would be expected. Third through eighth graders and 11th graders take the tests. But in the Nevada County Joint Union High School District, 61-percent for 11th graders met or exceeded the English-Language Arts standards. Meanwhile, only 34-percent of 11th graders met or exceeded the new Math standards. Johnson says students must now answer more complex, real-world problems that will take some time to adjust to. Other changes to the new STAR test include extended-answer and essay questions.
