State Budget Revision Might Impact Homeless

The Governor’s May state budget revision includes one major new policy change. It endorses a State Senate plan to essentially shift 2-billion dollars from mental health programs to housing homeless and low-income residents. But the proposal does also need Republican support, because it requires two-thirds approval in the Legislature… and there could also be opposition from mental health advovates. But in Nevada County, Health and Human Services Director Michael Heggarty says there wouldn’t be a significant impact on their programs…

Hospitality House recently lost half its operating budget, or 400-thousand dollars, due to a federal funding cut. Heggarty says there is still a lot of other homeless services money in the Governor’s plan, or 1 to 2-billion dollars…

And Heggarty says Nevada County can’t make up that loss.
