Recreational opportunities are still restricted at California’s state parks. But vehicle access has improved, with the reopening of parking lots. That includes South Yuba River, Malakoff Diggins, and Empire Mine state parks in western Nevada County. Acting Sierra District Superintendent, Matt Green, says picnics and barbecues, or anything that could result in large gatherings, are still prohibited. And it can even be difficult to maintain social distancing when you hike, with some of the trails fairly narrow, including in the Yuba River canyon…
Green says Independence Trail has also reopened. He says it’s hoped that recreationists won’t be cited or asked to leave, as parks get busier with the summer season…
And, as usual, getting in the river is prohibited at this time, due to high and cold flows recently augmented by heavy rains. The rocks are also slippery. Meanwhile, NID says it’s hoping to reopen Scotts Flat and Rollins Lakes next (this) week, while working with the county health department to create a safe boating environment that minimizes the risk of COVID-19 transmission.
