State Sales Tax Drops A Quarter Cent for 2017

Benjamin Franklin said a penny saved is a penny earned, but with the arrival of the new year, the state of California will be saving you a quarter of a cent for every dollar you spend. The sales tax is going down because the tax from Proposition 30, passed in 2012, has expired. Prop 30 was a temporary tax to help prevent cuts in education. Businesses are being advised to set their registers to the new rate, which is now seven and a quarter percent, plus any city or county sales taxes such as the just-approved Measure C in Nevada City, and Measure N in Grass Valley, which voters approved in 2012. Stromberg says if you pinching those pennies, you might want to check your receipt and make sure you got the correct rate…
