Still More to Learn About Omicron

The big news around COVID yesterday, was the arrival of the Omicron Variant in California. The newest variant of concern originated in South Africa and appears to be more communicable than other variants. However, County Health and Human Services Director Ryan Gruver says there are still questions to be answered.

Gruver says there are three major unknowns including its transmissibility.

The second concern is the new variant more dangerous.

The third unanswered question is how Omicron responds to vaccinations.
Gruver and other County Public Health officials say that more data should be available in a relatively quick timeframe, perhaps a matter of weeks. But until more is known, the three- tier approach of vaccination and boosters for eligible residents, masking indoors and out, and social distancing are all proven effective in reducing spread and effects of COVID.
