Storm Includes Waste in Wolf Creek

You are being asked to avoid contact with water in Wolf Creek for the next few days. The Nevada County Environmental Health Department says untreated or partially treated sewage has spilled into the creek during last week’s storms. In addition, water from the Newmont Mine which usually flows through the treatment plant, was temporarily diverted into the creek to prevent storm flow problems. Officials say the sewage should be fully diluted by the rainwater, and the mine water has manganese and iron levels that are above discharge permit requirements, but the water is NOT considered contaminated. However, as a precaution, contact with water in Wolf Creek from the plant downstream to the Bear River should be avoided until further notice.
