The holiday season is also normally the flu season. The first death this season of someone under 65 occurred in Los Angeles County last week. Nevada County’s Health Officer, Doctor Ken Cutler, says they haven’t had any ICU admissions so far. And, statewide, only 4% of people visiting a doctor with a fever, a cough or sore throat, and other cold-related symptoms, have tested positive for the flu. He says flu symptoms are stronger…
But as the weather gets colder, and more people stay indoors more, the flu transmits more easily. Cutler says getting a shot is always the best protection…
Cutler says a vaccine typically reduces the chance of getting the flu by up to 60%. Other common precautions include washing hands thoroughly with soap and warm water, or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Also, avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. And to reduce the chance of spreading the flu or a cold…cover a cough or sneeze with a tissue and dispose the tissue properly. Or stay home from school or work, if possible. Cutler says the flu season typically peaks in January and February.
