Theft and Fraud Charges From LOP Incident

A couple was arrested for allegedly burglarizing a residence in Lake of The Pines where they were staying and attempting to fraudulently cash checks of the elderly homeowner. The elderly victim’s son had hired a woman he was familiar with that provided in home care.  On Sunday the woman, Katie Duarte, was supposed to take the son to work and then pick him up again at 6:30 PM. Sheriff Keith Royal says the son became concerned when Duarte did not return to pick him up, so he found an alternate way back to the house.

As the son arrived at the house he saw Duarte and her boyfriend supposedly moving out of the house. He also noticed his mother’s jewelry box among items Duarte was taking with her. The son called the Sheriff, however at that time they could not determine if anything had been stolen and Duarte and Christopher St. Charles left the house.
The following morning the son realized there were several items that were missing including a checkbook and some missing checks.  The son and his mother went to the bank to close her account and the sheriff was contacted again meeting them at the bank. While at the bank a call came in from another branch of the same bank in Granite Bay.
