Today is Equal Pay Day

Today is Equal Pay Day, signifying how far into 2013 women must work to earn what men earned in 2012. The date is calculated by the National Partnership for Women and Families, and their report says women earn 85 cents an hour for every dollar a man earns, a gap of about 75-hundred dollars a year. Crawford says the wage gap is more pronounced for women of color, with Latina women making 55 cents for every dollar earned by a white man, and African-American women earning 64 cents. Crawford says her group wants an update on the Federal Equal Pay Act, with changes that include requiring employers to prove their reasons for pay differences, and not allowing them to retaliate against workers for discussing their pay….

Crawford says there is some bi-partisan support for a new Paycheck Fairness Act, even though Congress rejected similar bills each of the last two years.
