Cutler says there was a dramatic increase in mumps cases nationwide last year, mostly on college campuses where close living conditions can cause the virus to spread quickly, but over the past few decades, the number of cases has dropped by 99 percent after the development of the vaccine. Even though the two cases at Bear River are a cause for concern, Cutler says there will be no school closure or quarantine…

And about five days during that swelling period, according to Cutler. He also says frequent handwashing can help prevent transmission.
