The unofficial mayor of North San Juan, Bill Steele died on Monday. Steele and his wife Toki who he met in Okinawa were fixtures in the community.

Jeff Adams is the Executive Director for the North Columbia Schoolhouse Cultural Center and says Steele was known for his cantankerous personality, but he was also one to share what he had. Adams says he was often invited to come onto Steele’s property to pick fruit.

Steele was a fixture in Toki’s restaurant over the 40 some years that it was open. It was the place to grab some good food, and visit with friends and have an argument or two.

Toki died a couple of years ago and the restaurant was closed. A celebration of Steele’s life will be held in North San Juan Saturday afternoon. He was 92.
