Where Are All The Original Thinkers?

I mentioned the Mini-series “Hatfields & McCoys” that was on The History Channel last week.  I hope you had a chance to watch it.  It was a very well done show that tracked the families, their problems, and how the famous feud ended.  Bill Paxon and Kevin Costner did great jobs in the title roles.  (Remind me to tell you a funny story about Kevin Costner and KNCO sometime.)

The show was so popular it was the highest rated show, beating everything else on TV last week!  Not bad for a cable channel.  Network bigwigs, being the think outside the box kinda people they are, got the idea this feud must be popular amongst Americans.  I don’t know, maybe it is….I think it was just a well done piece of story telling, well written and acted.

But these bigwigs have decided that if Kevin Costner and Bill Paxon brought in better than 14 million viewers, Charlize Therone would be even better!  Hot idea number 2, let’s update the feud…show it in current day settings.   Never mind the fact that the families are over the events of a century ago.  Heck, some of them there Hatfields and McCoys are even married to each other!

To be fair, Ms. Therone has been working on this project for a long time.  It’s just that NBC decided to buy into it and bring it to life AFTER getting their tails beat by The History Channel.

I just wish the network bigwigs would look at why they lost last week to a puny little cable channel.  Good original programming.  Well researched, sharply written, well acted, non laugh tracked programming.  It wasn’t predictable, as 99 percent of network shows are these days.  It wasn’t over wrought drama, no smart alack teenagers, it was original.   Do you think they’ll see that?  Not unless dollar signs are attached…….
