Wilson Seeking First Elected DA Term

After being appointed to the job last June, Jesse Wilson has announced that he’s seeking his first elected term as Nevada County District Attorney in June of next year. Wilson is filling out the rest of Cliff Newell’s term, after he retired. And he had described Newell’s leadership as rudderless, with an unacceptably low conviction rate, which also resulted in the departure of former Assistant District Attorney Chris Walsh…

Wilson says traditional approaches to prosecution alone will not provide the county with the best chance of keeping families safe, without being more specific. He does indicate that recent bail reform has been effective, for the most part. That allows mostly non-violent offenders who don’t pose a danger to the community to not have to post bond…

Wilson has also announced the county’s first-ever Project Lead, starting in January. Prosecutors, alongside with law enforcement officials, will partner with fifth-grade classes for presentations about the justice system. It’s designed to promote positive and less-threatening interactions and give them more tools to make good decisions as they enter a critical stage in their lives.
