The Nevada County Office of Emergency Services has released this notice:
With the severe weather experienced on the east coast, this is a reminder to all of us that the winter season is just around the corner for Nevada County. The more we all can prepare prior to a severe winter storm, the safer our community will be.
Family Preparedness for Winter Storms
Wherever you live or travel, you should be aware of the dangers of winter storms and be prepared. To help your family cope during and after a severe winter storm, store a household disaster kit in an easily accessible location. This kit should be in a large, watertight container that can be easily moved and should hold at a minimum the following items:
Drinking water (minimum one gallon per person per day). First aid supplies. Emergency lighting – light sticks and/or a working flashlight with extra batteries and light bulbs. A hand-cranked or battery operated radio with extra batteries. Canned and packaged foods. Phone that plugs directly into the phone jack (cordless phones and answering machines will not work during a power outage).
Emergency home survival kits should contain a minimum of 72 hours worth of emergency supplies for home disaster preparedness. A duplicate kit for your automobile should also be considered.

Another important reminder for storm preparedness is to monitor a forecasted severe weather event. This can be accomplished by monitoring the local media or visiting the many weather forecast services available via the internet.
Sand and Sandbags are available for residents of Nevada County
The Nevada County Office of Emergency Services would also like to remind residents that free sand and sandbags are available. The location is next to the Nevada County Warehouse on the corner of Highway 49 and East Broad St. in Nevada City. Residents must bring their own shovel to fill the sandbags with sand. We do request that residents only take what they plan to use for protection of their personal property in the event of flooding.
