Yuba Canyon Fire Danger Is Topic Of Meeting

What many residents and public officials feel is the growing fire danger in the Yuba River Canyon is the topic of a meeting at the Nevada Theatre in Nevada City Monday evening. A number of fire department officials will be among those participating. That includes Battalion Chief Boyd Johnson, with the North San Juan Department, which covers the north side of the canyon….

Many people feel that the main concern is the increasing number of illegal campfires. One east of Edwards Crossing is believed to have sparked a small fire earlier this week (last week) that was safely contained without damaging any structures. But Johnson says fire departments, as as public land agencies, are understaffed in their patrolling capabilities…

Johnson says more help is needed from private property owners, including reporting illegal activity. Cal Fire sent letters last month. Johnson says campers and other recreationists should also try to apply more peer pressure. The meeting is from 6 to 8pm Monday at the Nevada Theatre in Nevada City.
