A day just like any other. The sun comes up and your life goes on. People to deal with and jobs to get done. So why is it such a big deal when it’s your birthday?
It’s not like you had anything to do with it after all. You just started a lifelong breathing habit on that day. A habit that, despite your best efforts as a child and a teenager, you continue indulging in to this day. So, why the celebration? If anything, as I’ve grown older I’ve learned, your parents are the ones that should be honored. After all you were their idea. They raised you, and fed you, clothed you, and resisted the urge to squeeze the life out of you when you backed their new car into a fire hydrant. Your parents deserved the praise on your birthday. So Thanks Mom & Dad!
There are two sorts of birthday’s. Regular ones, and ones that end in “5” or “0”. Both are milestones that are hard to ignore. The “Zero” ones mark the end of a decade, the “Five” ones mark the point that that new decade starts to slide down to the next “Zero”.
This year I have a “Five” birthday. Today. This is the first day of my slide to 60. Both of my brothers preceded me in this direction, they both said the same thing, “The day you turn 60 – something new hurts every morning.” My brothers were both very good to me growing up. They would never lie to me (except about the flying monkeys being real), so I’ve got that to look forward to!
In the meantime I have to say a couple of other Thanks. Thanks to the Good Lord above for all the things in my life, my Amazing Wife, my kids, a job that I wake up every morning looking forward to going to, and Thanks to all the friends I’ve made over the past 55 years.
I don’t know what tomorrow will bring, but I do know this…..it will be a wonderful trip around the sun we will share together!
